The Science
Gate Control Theory:
Your nervous system can only process so much at once. When you apply firm pressure to the body, those touch signals travel to the brain along fast-moving nerve fibres and they essentially beat pain and anxiety signals to the gate. The brain prioritises the sensation of pressure, and the other signal gets turned down.
It's the same reason you rub a bumped elbow without thinking, or why a tight hug can calm an overwhelmed child. The body already knows how to do this the ball just gives it something to work with.
The spikes create varied tactile input, which keeps the nervous system engaged rather than tuning out (the way it does with a smooth, uniform surface). That's why texture matters, and why these balls are carved rather than cast.
People don't realise they need it until they try it — then they don't want to be without it. Here's where a Calm Companion earns its place in a pocket, a bag, a bedside drawer.
- Sensory regulation — grounding, tactile input for overstimulation and anxious fidgeting. Gives your hands something to do.
- Anxiety & overwhelm — hold, squeeze, roll. Calming, repetitive movement that brings you back to the present.
- Needles, dental & procedures — a focus point for blood tests, IVF, scans and the dentist's chair.
- Tattoos & piercings — something to grip and press through the sharp bits.
- Period pain & cramps — squeeze during a wave, or roll over your lower back and hips.
- Pain relief during labour & contractions — targeting acupressure points that disrupt pain pathways
- Focus & desk — a quiet fidget for meetings, study and screen-heavy days.
- Travel — a distraction for motion sickness and flight anxiety
